Writing
Handwriting Without Tears
In writing, we use Handwriting Without Tears, a multisensory program to help teach pencil grip, letter formation, and literacy skills. In writing, we listen to songs, draw letters in the air, practice letters on white boards, and write letters in our handwriting packets.
Reading
Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum
Heggerty Curriculum is composed of daily engaging lessons that teach phonemic awareness skills, letter name/sound skills, and language awareness skills. We call this "blue book" because the cover of the book is blue.
Orton-Gillingham
Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory phonics approach that breaks reading and spelling tasks into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, then builds on those skills over time. In Orton-Gillingham lessons, we practice letters in sand, sight words on bumpy boards, and reading on the blending board.
Fry Words
Fry words are the most common words used in English, listed in order of frequency. These words must be easily recognized in order to achieve reading fluency. We call these words sight words because they should be read by sight, without sounding them out.
Math
Ready Math
In math, we use Ready Math. Ready Math is a program that encourages students to develop a deep understanding of math concepts, incorporates a math routine that promotes conversation, and includes a balance of conceptual understanding, procedural skills, fluency, and application.
Science & Social Studies
Science and Social Studies topics are integrated into our writing, reading, and math curriculum, as well as our student led projects.
